Therapy and Support for Families

When one member of a family is struggling, it often affects everyone. Anxiety, behavioral concerns, developmental differences, school difficulties, relationship changes, and major life transitions can influence the way family members communicate with one another and manage everyday life. At other times, the primary concern is the family dynamic itself, with patterns of conflict or misunderstanding that have become difficult to change.

At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, we work with families in a variety of ways depending on what is happening and what type of support is needed. Sometimes that means working with the family together. In other situations, a child, teen, or adult may participate in individual therapy while parents or other family members are incorporated into treatment when appropriate.

Understanding the Whole Family

People do not experience emotional and behavioral difficulties in isolation. Children and adolescents are developing within families, and adults are often balancing relationships, parenting, work, caregiving, and other responsibilities at the same time they are managing their own needs.

Understanding this broader context can be particularly important when a family has been trying to solve the same problem for a long time. Parents may find themselves responding differently to a child’s behavior, siblings may be affected by the amount of attention one family member requires, or repeated conflict may develop around school, routines, responsibilities, or expectations. Over time, everyone can become frustrated and patterns that began as attempts to help may stop being effective.

Therapy provides an opportunity to look at those patterns without assigning blame. The goal is to understand what is happening, why current approaches may not be working, and what changes could make everyday interactions more manageable.

Supporting Parents

Parenting can be difficult even when things are going relatively smoothly. When a child is experiencing anxiety, OCD, ADHD, autism, emotional regulation difficulties, school avoidance, or behavioral concerns, parents are often asked to make complicated decisions while also managing the impact on the rest of the family.

Parents may receive conflicting advice from schools, providers, family members, and the internet, or find that strategies that work well for other children are ineffective with their own child. Our clinicians help parents better understand the factors contributing to their child’s behavior and develop responses that fit their child’s individual needs.

Parent involvement may occur as part of a child’s treatment or through separate parent-focused sessions. The amount and type of involvement depend on the child’s age, presenting concerns, and treatment goals.

Communication and Family Relationships

Families sometimes become caught in communication patterns that leave everyone feeling unheard or misunderstood. Conversations quickly turn into arguments, family members avoid difficult topics, or parents and children find themselves having the same disagreement repeatedly without reaching a resolution.

Therapy can help family members recognize these patterns and develop more effective ways of communicating, solving problems, setting boundaries, and responding to one another. This can be especially useful during periods of transition, including adolescence, changes in family structure, shifts in caregiving responsibilities, or other events that affect established roles within the family.

Families and Neurodivergence

Families of neurodivergent children and adults may face challenges that are not always well understood by traditional parenting or family approaches. Sensory needs, differences in communication, executive functioning difficulties, emotional regulation, and varying expectations among family members can all affect daily routines and relationships.

Sometimes conflict develops because behavior is being interpreted as intentional or oppositional when the individual is actually overwhelmed, struggling to communicate a need, or unable to meet a particular demand in that moment. In other situations, family members may have very different neurodevelopmental profiles and therefore different needs for structure, flexibility, communication, sensory input, or downtime.

Our clinicians take a neurodiversity-affirming approach that helps families better understand these differences while still addressing behaviors and patterns that are causing genuine difficulty. Understanding why something is happening does not mean that families cannot work toward change. It allows that change to be based on a more accurate understanding of the people involved.

Our Approach to Working with Families

There is no single format for family-based treatment. Depending on the concern, our clinicians may incorporate family systems approaches, behavioral strategies, parent training and consultation, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, interpersonal approaches, and other evidence-based interventions.

Some families benefit from meeting together, while others make more progress through a combination of individual and parent work. We consider the age and needs of each family member, the reason for seeking treatment, and the family’s goals when determining the most appropriate approach.

Our goal is to help families better understand one another, reduce patterns that are creating unnecessary stress, and develop practical strategies that improve relationships and everyday functioning.

Getting Started

Families do not need to wait until relationships have reached a crisis point to seek support. Therapy can be helpful when a family recognizes that the same difficulties continue to arise despite their best efforts to address them.

Long Island Mental Health & Wellness provides individualized therapy, parent support, and family-based treatment for a wide range of emotional, behavioral, developmental, and relationship concerns. Contact our office to tell us a little about what your family is experiencing, and we can help determine which clinician and type of support may be the best fit.
