ADHD Assessments in Long Island

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects millions of people but remains widely misunderstood and often misdiagnosed. Many individuals struggle with symptoms for years without realizing the root cause, leaving them frustrated, stuck, and unsure where to turn.

At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, we understand the impact undiagnosed ADHD can have on individuals and families. We provide accessible, comprehensive ADHD assessments to help those in need find clarity and answers. Our compassionate, professional approach ensures every individual feels supported throughout the process, empowering them to better understand their needs.

Recognizing How ADHD Impacts You

ADHD can look different from person to person. For some, it appears as distractibility, difficulty finishing tasks, forgetfulness, impulsivity, or a feeling of being constantly “on the go.” For others, it appears as emotional overwhelm, procrastination, disorganization, trouble starting tasks, or working hard just to keep up.

At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, our ADHD assessments are designed to look beyond a checklist of symptoms. We take time to understand how attention, executive functioning, learning, emotions, sleep, sensory needs, anxiety, and life stress may all be contributing to the concerns you or your child is experiencing.

What Our Team Considers During an Assessment

Before arriving at a diagnosis, our team considers each client’s unique life experiences and symptoms. Our approach is thorough, thoughtful, and individualized. An ADHD evaluation may include assessment of:

  • Attention and concentration
  • Executive functioning
  • Working memory
  • Processing speed
  • Impulsivity and self-regulation
  • Emotional regulation
  • Learning and academic functioning
  • Anxiety, mood, and stress
  • Behavior at home, school, work, or in relationships
  • Developmental and medical history
  • Strengths, interests, and supports

Because ADHD often overlaps with autism, anxiety, learning differences, sleep issues, trauma, and other factors, we carefully consider what else may be contributing to the presenting concerns.

How Our ADHD Assessment Process Works

Knowing what to expect during an evaluation can help you feel more confident about the next steps. Our ADHD assessment process typically includes:

  1. Initial consultation. We begin with a comprehensive intake appointment to understand current concerns, developmental history, school or work experiences, family history, and goals for the evaluation.
  2. Rating scales and questionnaires. We may gather information from the individual, parents or caregivers, teachers, partners, or others important in the person’s life. This helps us understand how symptoms appear across settings.
  3. Testing session(s). Depending on the individual’s age and needs, testing may include measures of attention, executive functioning, learning, memory, processing speed, and emotional or behavioral functioning.
  4. Clinical interpretation. We integrate test results with history, observations, rating scales, and real-world functioning. We do not rely on a single test to make a diagnosis.
  5. Feedback and recommendations. At the feedback appointment, we review findings in clear, practical language. When appropriate, we provide a diagnosis and a written report with personalized recommendations for home, school, work, therapy, or medical follow-up.

Assessment Tools Used In the Evaluation Process

At Long Island Mental Health & Wellness, we aim to provide accurate, comprehensive assessments, so we utilize a range of tools to guide us. Depending on the individual’s age and presenting concerns, assessment tools may include clinical interviews, behavior rating scales, cognitive and executive functioning measures, academic testing, and computerized attention measures.

The measures we may use for your evaluation include:

  • Conners Rating Scales
  • Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC-3)
  • Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF-2)
  • Continuous Performance Tests (CPT)
  • Wechsler scales (WISC-V, WAIS-IV)
  • Academic achievement testing
  • Executive functioning measures
  • Autism and social-emotional screening tools when clinically indicated

No single test is used in isolation to diagnose ADHD. Assessment findings are interpreted within the context of the individual’s developmental history, daily functioning, strengths, and overall presentation.

What Makes Our Approach Different

We understand that ADHD is not simply a problem of “not trying hard enough.” Many bright, capable children, teens, and adults with ADHD have spent years feeling misunderstood, frustrated, or overwhelmed. The message they often receive, both from others and themselves, is that they should be able to manage, leading to a cycle of shame and exhaustion.

Our comprehensive evaluations are designed to break this cycle. We go beyond a simple diagnosis to uncover the full picture, identifying both the challenges and strengths. We aim to help clients leave the process with a clearer understanding of how their brain works and what supports may actually help. By illuminating the ‘why’ behind their daily struggles, we equip them with practical strategies and targeted supports that are genuinely helpful and sustainable.

What to Expect After the Evaluation

Our goal isn’t just to provide a diagnosis, but to offer clear direction for the path forward. Following the evaluation, we will provide personalized, actionable suggestions tailored to your unique profile.

Recommendations may include school accommodations, workplace supports, therapy goals, executive functioning strategies, parent guidance, medication consultation with a physician, or referrals for additional services when needed. This tailored roadmap is designed to empower you with the tools and knowledge you need to navigate challenges and leverage your strengths effectively.
